With a number of online mattress companies that are out there today, it can be a challenge to know which one you can trust and which ones are to be avoided and one of the most popular ones that has popped up in the last couple of years is of course Casper. We decided to do this Casper mattress review based on the confusion that is in the market right now so we will be digging into Casper mattresses and finding out if they are as great as they claim to be.

Company History

To kick off this Casper mattress review we are going to start with the founding of the company itself. Casper is a startup mattress company by Jeff Chapin (Head of product), Gen Suzuki (Industrial Designer), and Neil Parikh (Materials Designer) that launched in 2014. The company has a significant online presence and has become one of the most well-known names in the online mattress industry. They offer foam mattresses layered with poly and memory foam, claiming to have hybridized soft latex and memory foam – foams which are rarely found together. 

As of 2017, Casper has redesigned its mattress twice based on tests and customer feedback they received via interaction with clients, testing, surveys, and interviews. All three designs in their history are 9.5 inches thick.

The first design had 1.5 inches of latex foam, 1.5 inches of memory foam, and 6.5 inches of support foam. Their second design retained the measurements for both latex and memory foam, but added 1.5 inches of poly foam and lessened the support foam to 5.0 inches. Casper’s current design switched latex foam for 1.5 inches of response poly foam. This version was released in January 2017.

Our Casper Mattress Review

In our Casper mattress review, we will be trying and test their king size mattress to find out if there is truth to Casper’s claim of having made the perfect mattress – or if it is worthy of the popularity and hype it has been getting from online communities for the past three years.

Foam

Casper uses four different layers of Poly, Memory, and Support foam.

Top: 1.5 inches of responsive poly foam to provide comfort, cooling, and bounce.

Second: 1.5 inches of memory foam to provide support and pressure relief. Memory foam often has heat retention issues, which probably the reason why it is placed below the poly foam layer.

Third: Support foam made of 1.5 inches of transitional poly foam to add to the softness of the base foam.

Bottom: 5.0 inches of support poly foam that acts as the base for the entire mattress to support the other layers.

Memory foam is known to have great support, pressure relief, and providing great body contouring; however, it can tend to retain heat and may become uncomfortable to sleep on. By combining response poly foam and memory foam, the Casper mattress seems to be aiming for a contouring feel without the excess heat retention of pure memory foam.

Cover

Casper uses a simple mattress cover, not unlike the standard design of most mattresses sold online. The cover is stretchy, thin, and soft. As stated earlier, materials for the cover come from Belgium and the United States, which are assembled in the United States or Mexico.

The cover is thin, allowing sleepers to feel the foam layers more directly. The cover is made of 100% polyester, with side panels at 51% polyester and 49% polypropylene.

Mattress Support

We would rate the firmness and support of Casper’s mattress at around a medium. Their claim of being the “one perfect mattress” means they are aiming towards a one-size-fits-all design, which appeals to most sleepers but not all of course. The mattress how no weight limit, as it is designed to accommodate most sleepers. However, they recommend that it is best for people 250 pounds and below. Heavier sleepers may sink through the first three comfort layers, which is why we do not recommend Casper for the rather heavier sleepers.

The contour, meanwhile, of the mattress is standard. It creates a generalized compression around your entire body which I liked.

While Casper uses memory foam, I did not feel hot at all while using the mattress. The layering of poly and memory foam has worked to lessen the memory foam’s heat retention properties, so feeling hot while sleeping on it is not much of a problem anymore, unlike those in the previous versions of Casper’s mattress.

The Casper mattress has average support in any sleeping position, except that there are roughly 5 inches of sinkage when sitting at the edge. I find that this may make sleeping and other bedroom activities close to the edge of the bed fairly difficult.

I tested the sinkage of Casper’s mattress. I did not find the contour to be particularly sharp for all the sleeping positions I have tried. Lying on my back, the bed sank 2.5 inches. On my side, I got 3.5 inches of sinkage. Meanwhile, sitting on the edge got me 4 to 5 inches of sinkage while standing in the middle got me 6 inches of sinkage. However, sinkage results may vary depending on your weight and body type, so it may not offer the same results for you.

Before this version, I have also tried their 2014 version of the mattress. However, I experienced some neck pain with the original mattress. Casper then offered to send me a latex topper free of charge, and that solved the issue for me. It had significantly added to the comfort I experienced while using the bed. Since then, their next versions added latex and eventually a responsive poly foam which improved the mattress. True indeed, the current version is better than the first one I tried!

Shipping, Warranty, Weight

The weight of the king-sized mattress I got is 103 pounds, while the queen size mattress weighs 83 pounds.

Casper also offers free shipping, with the mattress compressed in a compact box. It takes 2 to 7 business days to ship, though it may be shortened to two days with Amazon Prime. The company also offers a trial period of 100 nights and what they claim to be an “industry-leading” warranty of 10 years – which actually is a good amount of time to test the mattress and see for yourself if it suits your needs. The product itself is not too pricey and compared to most 10-inch mattresses out in the market that would cost you around two to three thousand dollars, I would say it is worth the price.

They also offer exemplary customer support, which I and other people have liked. Based on reviews and experiences of users in Amazon, most believe that Casper does interact with its customers well, requesting for feedback even to consider when coming up with more design changes in the future. This is evident as well considering they have redesigned their mattresses a few times due to customer feedback they received. 

The Verdict

Casper is seen as a company with good online presence and it has not failed to maintain its reputation online for the past three years. Based on my experience and online reviews, the company itself offers great customer service and willingness to receive feedback – this is perhaps the reason it has maintained its following on and offline. They change their design when they see fit, which is evidence that they pay attention to the feedback they get.

The mattress itself, on the other hand, is average and with standard contour and generalized compression around your body. For a nearly 10 inches thick mattress, this product does not fail to prove what it is worth. The mattress is sturdy and offers nice support, but is also fairly comfortable and will satisfy the average sleeper. However, the one-size-fits-all approach to their mattress means you cannot choose to tweak the firmness of the bed – you either like or dislike what you get, which may be the reason for its many mixed reviews online. If you, however, weigh on the heavier side, you may want to double check if it provides enough support for you. I wouldn’t recommend Casper for heavier sleepers.

I would, however, recommend this bed for those looking to get a fairly comfortable mattress for less money. With Casper’s well-loved customer service and one hundred days of free trial, you can rest assured that you’re given enough days to test the mattress for yourself before deciding to keep it or start looking for a different one.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to what feels comfortable for you – if you prefer very soft or firm mattresses, however, you may not like Casper’s mattress as it is of medium firmness catering to the needs of most people. I have taken quite a liking to it. Still, you have one hundred days to try the mattress to see if it is the right one for you. Casper is a great company that can make the most bang for your buck!
